Catholic Radios

This section shows you the advantages of using Short Wave Radios to access to excellent Catholic programs such as those from EWTN Global Catholic Network. The main reason I am focusing on Short Wave Radio is because it is the simplest means to access to EWTN great programs. Even if you can watch EWTN on TV or from your computer, even if you can listen to EWTN via Sirius satellite radio, it is still important for you to know the advantages of EWTN Short Wave Radio and how to listen to it.
Here are the reasons why:
1. EWTN Short Wave Radio
- Think about your friends or neighbors who can not afford to pay for monthly subscriptions to Cable TV or Satellite TV, who do not have access to the Internet. Think about people you know worldwide who have neither TV nor computers. Make them happy by letting them know that EWTN is available to them through Short Wave Radio.
With a Short Wave radio, they won't have to worry about any monthly subscription, any Internet access fee, any Cable TV bill, no any other cost than the radio itself. Short Wave radios are cheap, this reminds me of one of my uncles who, under strong repression by the Vietnamese Communist regime back in the late 1970, used to listen to the news from worldwide Short Wave Radio stations. In that time, listening to any other source of news than the Communist-gouvernment-controlled news was subjected to sanction of many years in jail. This little story is here to show you that even the poor people of Vietnam had Short Wave radios. Therefore, reaching out to your friends using EWTN Short Wave Radio is without boundary.
- EWTN Short Wave Radio is broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in English and Spanish.
- EWTN Short Wave Radio features speakers and programs that are faithful to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.
- EWTN Short Wave radio broadcasts to Africa, Europe, and Latin America. So when you travel, you will still be able to listen to your favorite radio program. Check frequencies and availability here
- A Short Wave radio allows you to listen to EWTN and any local Catholic radio broadcast through local AM/FM radios, check availability here.
- You can use your Short Wave radio anywhere in your house and not be tied to a TV or a computer. You can listen to your radio while cooking, while taking a shower, while cleaning your garage or your backyard ... and I, as a dad of four young children, make use of the time when I change diapers, give them a bath, or when I wash the dishes, etc ... and most of all, you don't have to depend on an Internet connection :-)
- Regarding the Short Wave radio, I use the Sony ICF-SW7600GR (pictured below on the left) and have been very happy with it. It's good to use the ICF-SW7600GR together with the provided AN-71 antenna, or the optional Short Wave active antenna AN-LP1.
2. Other means to listen to Catholic radios
- Satellite Radio
With a monthly fee, you'll have access to digital EWTN satellite radio.
Sirius features radios that allow you to listen at home and while driving. However, if you travel to Europe, Africa or elsewhere, you will not likely be able to use your satellite radio.
- Internet Radio
There are a lot of good Catholic radios available through the Internet, and they are to be encouraged. If you work a lot in front of a computer, this might be your way to go. However, Internet radios can not still beat the flexibility of Short Wave radios because you are still dependent on your computer and your Internet connection (wire or wireless). Moreover, no laptop computer can run on battery for more than 10 hours; a set of four Alkaline AA batteries allows my ICF-SW7600GR to be on for about 40 hours ;-)
- Using Radios' Archive Programs
Download the very rich audio library from EWTN or Catholic Answers radio programs. The files are usually in RealPlayer format. You can use software to convert them into MP3 format. Once in MP3 format, you would burn the files on CDs or load them on an iPod. Then all you have to do is to plug an FM transmitter to your MP3 CD player or iPod. The FM transmitter will send radio signal to your car's FM radio receiver (if you have MP3 built-in MP3 players then you don't have to bother with an FM transmitter). You would then be able to listen to all archived EWTN and Catholic Answers radio programs while driving your car.
