There are some accessories for your bike that would make your rides safe. If you ride a lot on two-way roads or on roads where there is no bike lane, it is a wise idea to add front and rear flashing lights for your safety. A bike computer that displays your current speed and distance would be a plus. And a water bottle holder (not shown) is convenient.

I would recommend two books to learn about the fun of road cycling:
-
The Tour de France Complete Book of Cycling by David Chauner and Michael Halstaed.
The name of this book is not very representative since it does feature a chapter about the Tour de France race but the whole book has tons of good general information for beginners. This is an old book from 1990, but stuffed with so much information about bikes, pedaling techniques, drafting, racing, bike fitting, basic/advanced conditioning, etc. You can find this book used at online stores for $1 or less. You can’t get better deal than that.
-
Tour de France for Dummies by Phil Liggett, James Raia, Sammarye Lewis.
This book is fun to read. It will help you to understand why so many people watch bike races. It explains tactics and strategies that racing teams put together to win races. Yes, you'll learn why it's a team sport :-) It’s only when you understand the degrees of difficulty it takes to win a race that you can start to enjoy watching cycling races.
